The Yoga Sutras by Patajali is a collection of 196 Sanskrit-language sutras. These texts were created in the early centuries CE, by Patanjali, a sage who synthesized the wisdom from older traditions of yoga. Originally a work in progress, these sutras are now considered one of the world's most important sources for the practice of yoga.

The Yoga Sutras are comprised of four chapters. The first chapter is dedicated towards enlightenment. The next four chapters cover the steps to achieve the goal. The 52 sutras provide information on the benefits of meditation and kriyas. The 54/55 sutras detail Ashtanga and Karma yoga. The two last sutras describe the benefits of meditation on a regular basis.
